Biography
Mimi Allin is a performance artist and poet making work for camera, exploring contemporary 4th wave feminist themes, encompassing oppressed/oppressor dynamics and exploring the relationship between contemporary discourses about landscape and the self’s internal processes. Walking, poetry and ritual are recurrent themes in her work. She has twice crossed the Pacific Ocean by sailboat, has worked as a climbing ranger on Mt Rainier, served in the Peace Corps in Poland, taught English Literature in Mongolia and spent a month alone in a 14' boat in The Graveyard of the Pacific. Using few materials, often found objects, in open and urban landscapes, she creates movement performances for video. She also undertakes long, sometimes grueling, performance works. She has performed in festivals and venues including Elsewhere Museum, Performing Arts Forum, Seattle Art Museum, Bumbershoot, Yellowfish Durational Performance Art Festival, Soil Gallery, Bellweather Festival, Sammamish Art Fair and LoFi Festival among others. She has exhibited at Soho20 Gallery, Tether, Vermillion, Gallery 1412, Hiawatha Lofts, Le Merde and 1810. She is the recipient of an Americans for the Arts Public Art Award, Art Interruptions Grant (SDOT/Seattle Office Arts & Cultural Affairs), several City Artist Grants (Seattle Office Arts & Cultural Affairs), a Sprout! Grant, several 4Culture Grants, an artSparks Grant and a Fred McKay Grant. She has been guest curator for SAM/Word at Seattle Art Museum and for Whit's Worth Reading Series at Seattle City Hall. In 2007, she was nominated for Seattle Poet Populist. She produced the performance art series at Phinney Gallery in Seattle from 2007-2010 and the multi-media series at Soho20 from 2004-2006. In 2006, she funded and produced a spoken word CD for City College/CUNY.
Artist Statement
After receiving an MA in Poetry from City College CUNY in 2006, Allin undertook a year-long performance in Seattle called "Poetess at Green Lake." There she connected poetry and people, creating day-long installations and inviting street-level participation. In May 2007, she melted a hole in a 200-pound block of ice and read a Robert Frost's "Fire and Ice" through the hole to people on the other side. In June, she collected poems from 100 local, living poets, printed them on t-shirts and handed them free to runners willing to put them on and run around the lake. In July, she cut a 3-circuit labyrinth into the grass and asked visitors to enter and make a perfect circle. Behind each action was an intention to initiate dialog and form community. By year's end, she founded a poetry & performance art series and went on to curate and perform in venues across the Pacific NW.
After 6 years of crafting experience for an audience, Allin placed herself at the center of the performance work "Tahoma Kora." For 65-days, Allin prostrated a pilgrimage around Mt Tahoma (Rainier) participating in the spiritual in the landscape. The work had profound effects on her psyche. Every work that followed was an attempt to understand this shift-- including a 49-day bardo in a pioneer cemetery, the writing of Shakespeare's sonnets in the sand at low tide, the shrinking of her vocabulary to 108 words from one poem by Pablo Neruda for 108 days, the planting of dreams along the Pacific Crest and the little blue typewriter she carried over the Alps to document her transformation on Mont Tendre. Admittedly the goal was to outwit the clever artist and get to the real stuff. In this effort, she attended Clown School in Paris and went on to work/study in Siberia.
Concurrent to her development as a performance artist, Allin's studio practice elicited a decade's long investigation of self. By 2017, her body of work in self-portraiture had developed into an improvisational movement practice based in conceptual and performance art. Allin began producing video works, using her body as a visual territory for knowledge production and for healing and exploration, seeking to activate a critical commentary on gender, power and human relationships. This new body of work was about opening a dialogue between “relationship” and “function" in a proprietary culture that isolates the subject from its production. In it, she teaches transformation by reclaiming her body and its charged relation to the landscape, falling cathartically into and out of rhythm with the world, eliciting humor and reflection, disrupting the basic structures of things, both real and imagined. Allin continues to write and make walking and performance art work.
